Reflections of Grace

MERCY FOR THE EMPTY-HANDED

Scripture

Luke 18:9-14

9He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt:10“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.11The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.12I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’13But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Reflect
  1. 1.How might good religious acts become dangerous when they make you proud instead of grateful?
  2. 2.What would it look like for you to come to God today with honest humility instead of self-defense?
  3. 3.The humble tax collector went home justified. How does this challenge your view of what makes a person right before God?
Exposition
The Pharisee prayed, fasted, and gave. From the outside, he looked serious about God. But his prayer revealed the problem. He stood before God full of himself and looked down on others. Pride can turn even good practices into a mirror where we admire ourselves. Then Jesus shows us the tax collector. He had nothing impressive to offer. No spiritual résumé. No comparison that made him look better. He stood far off, aware of his sin, and simply asked God for mercy. He came empty-handed, and that was the safest way to come. This is the truth Jesus wants us to see: God does not justify the proud who celebrate their own goodness. He receives the humble who know their need for mercy. We are not made right with God by proving we are better than someone else. We are made right by grace. The ground is level at the foot of mercy. You do not have to pretend before God. You do not have to polish your image, hide your weakness, or build your worth on someone else’s failure. The door of grace is open to those who come honestly. The humble heart goes home forgiven. So today, lay down comparison. Lay down self-defense. Lay down the need to appear spiritually impressive. Come to God like the tax collector, with empty hands and a needy heart. Mercy is not for those who think they are full. Mercy fills the empty.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I trust in myself and look down on others. Teach me to come before you with honesty, humility, and a deep need for your mercy. Thank you that you receive sinners who cry out to you. Keep my heart low before you and full of grace toward others.
