Reflections of Grace
KNOWN & NEVER ALONE
Scripture
Psalms 139:1-12
1O LORD, you have searched me and known me!2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.3You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.4Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.7Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?8If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!9If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,10even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,”12even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
Reflect
- 1.How does it make you feel to know that God sees you this completely?
- 2.In verse 7, David asks where he can go from God’s Spirit or presence. Is there any part of your life you have quietly treated as “off limits” to God?
- 3.In verses 11–12, darkness is not dark to God. What hidden fear, sorrow, or struggle do you need to bring into the light of his presence?
- 4.Apply: Spend time today inviting God to search your heart and naming one area where you need to trust his nearness instead of hiding.
Exposition
Most of us want to be known, but not too known. We want people to understand us, but we also fear what they might see if they looked too closely. Our mixed motives, private worries, hidden regrets, and quiet struggles can make us feel exposed. So we hide, manage impressions, and keep certain parts of ourselves guarded.
tells us that God already knows us completely. He knows when we sit and when we rise. He understands our thoughts before we can explain them. He knows our words before they reach our lips. At first, that can feel frightening. But David responds with wonder because he understand that to be fully known by God is not to be rejected. It is to be held.
Our hope is this: God’s knowledge is wrapped in his presence. He is not only aware of us from a distance; he is near. There is nowhere we can go where he is not already present. Not the highest joy, not the deepest sorrow, not the farthest place, not even the darkest night. You may feel lost, but you are not beyond his reach. Darkness is not dark to him.
So stop running from the One who already sees you and still draws near. Bring him the part of your life you have kept guarded. Let his searching become comfort, not fear. The God who knows you fully is the God who stays with you faithfully.
Prayer
“Father, thank you that you know me completely and still remain near. Help me stop hiding from your presence and trust your faithful care. Shine your light into the places where I feel afraid, ashamed, or alone. Teach me to rest in the comfort of being fully known and deeply loved by you. Amen.”
