Reflections of Grace
THE GOD WHO SEES AND SPEAKS
Scripture
Jeremiah 23:21-24
21“I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied.22But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds.23“Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away?24Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.
Reflect
- 1.In verse 21, God says he did not send the prophets, yet they ran. Where do you need to slow down and make sure you are listening to God before speaking or acting?
- 2.God asks if he is only a God nearby and not also far away. How does this challenge a small view of God in your life?
- 3.God declares, "Do I not fill heaven and earth?" How does the reality of God's omnipresence both comfort you and challenge you in your hidden thoughts and secret struggles?
Exposition
It is possible to be busy doing religious things and still not be listening to God. That was the danger in Jeremiah’s day. Some prophets were running, speaking, and claiming authority, but God had not sent them. They had words, energy, and confidence, but they did not have God’s truth.
This passage reminds us that not every confident voice is faithful. God says that if these prophets had truly stood in his council, they would have spoken his words and turned people away from evil. Real truth does not simply flatter us. It calls us back. God’s word does not leave us comfortable in sin; it leads us into light.
That can be uncomfortable because we often prefer a God who stays small, manageable, and nearby only when we want help. But the Lord asks, “Am I a God at hand, and not a God far away?” He fills heaven and earth. No place is outside his presence. No secret is hidden from his sight. We may hide from others, but we cannot hide from God.
And this is hope, not only warning. The God who sees everything is also the God who speaks truth to rescue us. His searching presence is mercy. His correction is grace. He exposes what is false so we can return to what is true.
So today, listen carefully. Do not rush ahead with your own wisdom while asking God to bless it afterward. Stand before him honestly. Let his word search you, correct you, and guide you. The God who fills heaven and earth is near enough to lead your next step.
Prayer
“Father, help me listen to your voice above every false or flattering word. Search my heart and expose anything I have tried to hide from you. Thank you that your correction is meant to lead me back to life. Teach me to walk in truth, humility, and obedience today.”
