Reflections of Grace

ANTIDOTE TO ANXIETY

Scripture

1 Peter 5:6-11

6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,7casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.8Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.9Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.10And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.11To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Reflect
  1. 1.In verse 6, Peter calls you to humble yourself under God’s mighty hand. What situation are you trying to control instead of surrendering to God?
  2. 2.In verse 7, Peter says God cares for you. Do you truly believe that?
  3. 3.In verses 8-9, Peter warns you to be watchful and resist the devil. Where do you need to stand firm instead of giving in to fear, temptation, or discouragement?
  4. 4.In verse 10, God promises to restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after suffering. How does this give you hope in your present trial?
Exposition
We carry so much, don't we? Worries about the future, fears about our children, anxieties about our health, stress about our finances. We think we are strong enough to bear it alone, or we secretly believe that no one else cares enough to help. Peter speaks into this weariness with a stunning command: humble yourself and cast all your anxiety on God. Humility and anxiety are connected. Pride says, "I can handle this." Humility says, "I cannot handle this, but God can." That is why Peter immediately says to cast all your anxieties on him. Not some of them or just the spiritual-sounding ones. All of them. Because God cares for you. His hand is mighty, and his heart is tender. But Peter also calls us to watchfulness because anxiety can make us vulnerable to lies, fear, and temptation. The enemy wants suffering to isolate, weaken, and make you forget God’s grace. So resist him. Stand firm in faith. You are not the only one struggling, and you are not struggling alone. Suffering is not the end of your story. The God of all grace will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. Your trial may shake you, but it cannot overthrow the God who holds you. The burden is real, but his care is greater. So today, loosen your grip. Give God the worry you keep replaying. Stay alert. Resist the enemy. And rest in the promise that the God of all grace is working in your suffering for your good and his glory.
Prayer
Father, thank you that your hand is mighty and your heart is full of care. Help me humble myself before you and give you the anxieties I keep carrying. Strengthen me to resist fear, temptation, and discouragement. Restore and establish me by your grace as I trust you today. Amen.
