NEARNESS IS BEST

Psalms 73:25-28

25Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.27For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.28But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.
Reflect
  1. 1.In verse 25, Asaph says, “Whom have I in heaven but you?” What competing desire, comfort, or security has been pulling your heart away from God?
  2. 2.Asaph admits that his flesh and heart may fail. Where do you feel weak, weary, or unable to keep yourself strong?
  3. 3.God is called the strength of Asaph’s heart and his portion forever. How does this truth speak to an area where you feel empty or insufficient?
  4. 4.In verse 28, Asaph says it is good to be near God. What would it look like for you to make nearness to God your highest good today?
Exposition
We often discover what we truly treasure when life disappoints us. Asaph had wrestled with envy, confusion, and bitterness. He had looked at the prosperity of the wicked and wondered if faithfulness was worth it. But after bringing his troubled heart before God, his vision began to clear. He no longer wanted merely what others had. He wanted God himself. That is the turning point of . Asaph realizes that nothing in heaven or on earth can compare with the Lord. His circumstances may still be difficult. His body and heart may still fail. But God has become his strength and portion. When everything else feels unstable, God remains enough. The Christian life is not built on having everything go well. It is built on belonging to God. Your health may weaken. Your plans may change. Your emotions may rise and fall. People may disappoint you. But God does not fail. His presence is not a temporary comfort; it is an eternal inheritance. So today, ask yourself what your heart has been chasing. Is it success, approval, comfort, control, or someone else’s life? These things cannot carry the weight of your soul. Draw near to God again. Tell of his works. Make him your refuge. Nearness to God is not the consolation prize. Nearness to God is the greatest good. How near is God to you today?
Prayer
“Father, forgive me for the times I have wanted your gifts more than I have wanted you. When my heart feels weak and my strength fails, remind me that you are my portion forever. Draw me near to you and teach me to find my refuge in your presence. Let my life declare your goodness today.”
