GRACE THAT REMAINS

Psalms 106:1-12

1Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!2Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD, or declare all his praise?3Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!4Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people; help me when you save them,5that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance.6Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.7Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.8Yet he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make known his mighty power.9He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry, and he led them through the deep as through a desert.10So he saved them from the hand of the foe and redeemed them from the power of the enemy.11And the waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left.12Then they believed his words; they sang his praise.
Reflect
  1. 1.In verse 1, the psalm begins with thanksgiving. What specific evidence of God’s enduring love can you thank him for today?
  2. 2.In verses 6–7, the psalmist confesses that God’s people failed to remember his abundant kindness. Where are you most prone to forget God’s past mercy when facing present pressure?
  3. 3.In verse 8, God saved his people for his name’s sake. How does this remind you that your hope rests not in your faithfulness, but in God’s character?
  4. 4.In verses 11–12, God’s deliverance led his people to believe his words and sing his praise. What rescue, provision, or answered prayer should move you back to worship?
Exposition
It is easy to praise God after deliverance, but harder to trust him before the waters part. begins with thanksgiving, but it quickly becomes honest about the heart of God’s people. They had seen his wonders in Egypt, yet when trouble came, they forgot his mercy. Fear made them short-sighted. Pressure made them unbelieving. Their memory of God’s goodness faded when danger felt near. We know that struggle too. We can sing about God’s faithfulness on Sunday and panic on Monday. We can remember his love in one season and question his care in the next. Forgetfulness is not just a memory problem; it is a heart problem. When we forget what God has done, fear often becomes louder than faith. But the hope of this passage is not found in Israel’s strong faith. It is found in God’s faithful mercy. Verse 8 says he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his power known. God did not rescue them because they had remembered well. He rescued them because he is merciful, faithful, and true. Their failure did not cancel his steadfast love. That is grace. God remains faithful even when our faith is weak. He remembers mercy when we forget. The sea that looked like a dead end became the place where God displayed his saving power. So today, remember again. Let yesterday’s mercies strengthen today’s trust and bring your forgetful heart back to the Lord.
Prayer
“Father, thank you for your goodness and steadfast love that never runs out. Forgive me for the times I forget your mercy and let fear lead my heart. Help me remember your faithfulness and trust you when I feel pressured or afraid. Let your grace turn my confession into praise.”
