HE IS ALREADY SPEAKING

There is something quietly remarkable about how this psalm opens. It does not begin with a command to listen, or an argument for God’s existence. It begins with an observation: the heavens are already declaring. Day after day, night after night, creation has been speaking in a language that needs no translator — pouring out speech, revealing knowledge, its voice going out to the ends of the earth. This is not poetic exaggeration. The psalmist is making a theological claim: God has never been silent. Long before any of us learned to pray, the sky was already preaching. The ordinary rhythms of sunrise and starlight, rain and season, have always carried a message about the One who made them. We are not the ones who have to break the silence; we are the ones who have to notice the sound that was never silent to begin with. What makes this psalm worth returning to is the size of its claim. “There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.” No place is excluded. No people group is too far. The testimony of God’s glory reaches everyone, everywhere, in a voice that doesn’t depend on language or literacy. This is good news for anyone who has ever wondered if God’s revelation is reserved for the spiritually elite. It isn’t. It is written across the sky for anyone willing to look up. As we begin this week of prayer, it helps to start here. Not with our effort to summon God’s presence, but with the recognition that he has already been speaking. Our task this week is not to generate something from nothing. It is to quiet the noise long enough to hear a voice that has never stopped.
